Why Chunx burns different

Three things to compare in any bag of charcoal: how long it burns, how hot it gets, and what's left behind. Here's how Chunx does on all three — and why.

Purity

Pure in, pure out.

100% carbonized hardwood, sourced from sustainably managed forests. No coal dust, no limestone, no borax, no scrap wood. Purity is why it burns to almost nothing: airflow stays open from hour one to hour twenty, and your food tastes like the fire, not the bag.

Performance

1200°F+ when you want it. 20 hours when you don't.

Open the vents and temps spike. Close them and they drop. That's throttle response, and it's what dense lump does that a pillow briquet can't. In a Kamado or ceramic grill, one load runs over 20 hours. In an open kettle, count on 4+ hours at peak heat.

Material

Big pieces are the point

Whole logs and branches of ultra-dense hardwood, carbonized intact and hand-screened for XL size. More mass per piece means more fuel per load, and the irregular shapes leave the air gaps that make your vents actually work. Rock-dense, and it cracks clean with tongs if you need it smaller.

Use Cases & Applications

Ceramic Kamado

(Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe, Primo, Vision)

Chunx is built for environments with small ash systems and airflow-controlled cooking styles that rewards a fuel with fast throttle response.

kettle grill

(Weber and equivalents)

Great for when you’re just getting started. Since vent control is less precise, you can expect around 4 hours of burn time with peak heat.

Offset and Drums

For cooks who value heat purity and are comfortable managing the fire. If this is your set up check out our Max XL Briquets

High-Heat Searing

Chunx peaks around 1000– 1200°F+ making it the right tool for reverse sear, hot-and-fast cooks, and premium steakhouse-style food.

Tactical use

The Ignition Bed for Onyx

Onyx Binchotan is notoriously difficult to light. Build a roaring hot bed of Chunx, then place Onyx on top to ignite from the base heat.
